IRIS CKD Staging Tool for Cats

CKD Staging Tool

Estimate chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage and substage for cats based on creatinine, SDMA, UPC and blood pressure values.

Important Information

This free tool, developed by a veterinarian, estimates CKD stage based on publicly available guidelines from the International Renal Interest Society (IRIS).
It is an independent educational resource, not affiliated with or endorsed by IRIS, and does not replace veterinary diagnosis or clinical judgment.

Prerequisites

  • Measurements should be obtained when the cat is hydrated and clinically stable, not during acute illness.

About IRIS CKD Staging

The International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) staging system helps veterinarians classify the severity of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats. This standardized approach ensures consistent diagnosis and treatment recommendations worldwide.

Understanding the Stages

  • Stage 1: Non-azotemic, early kidney changes detected
  • Stage 2: Mild azotemia, minimal clinical signs may be present
  • Stage 3: Moderate azotemia, multiple clinical signs may be present
  • Stage 4: Severe azotemia, significant clinical signs may be present

Substaging

IRIS staging includes substaging based on proteinuria (UPC ratio) and blood pressure. These substages help guide treatment decisions and monitor disease progression.
